2009 Photos

Did Lionel use different shades of Special Green (collectors call it State Green) over the five years of State Set production? The five cars below were all photographed sequentially with the same distance, flash, etc. The first car is very late production 414 with rivets on its ends. The doors are darker than the body! The roof ventilators are a little lighter than the body! This car came in a three-car set with a 381E. The nicks in the set's 412 California car showed that the body was originally State Brown. See the last photograph below.

Cars 2 thru 4 below also came with a 381E Ivory-windowed set. They are from the 'North Woods' set with roof upgrades from another set. The fifth car is the Ivory-windowed 414 from the North Woods set. I don't own any early State cars for comparison so I shot the North Woods 381E. It has never been taken apart and amazingly has nice original pantographs and headlights. The first car definitely is a different shade of Special Green. The Ivory-windowed cars may be a bit darker than the 381E. My poor photography makes it hard to differentiate.

The last two photos on this page show car boxes from two different 409E sets.

Here's the very late 412 whose body was first State Brown. See the nicks. It's body color matches the lighter color of the 414 at the top of this page. Would Lionel make up two coaches just to unload a spare 416 from 1929? See the second set of boxes below.

These three boxes came with the 409E set whose car roofs were swapped with the 'North Woods' set. Note the sub-title IVORY denoting window color.

Here are the boxes from the mixed-up 'clear out the warehouse' set. The 414 box marked P.GREEN (for the window color) goes with the first car above. The similar 412 box housed the car whose body was originally State Brown. The 416 was a leftover 1929 style.
