Urban Legends:

  • The 433E outfit, 20th Century Limited (400E + three cars), came only with Ivory-windowed cars. False: Tom Sefton had a boxed set with Apple Green windows (one car was a 414 Illinois rather than a 413 Colorado).
  • The 409E outfit, The Olympian (381E + three cars), came only with Apple Green-windowed cars. False: See sets below. In late sets, window color was indicated on the car boxes -- IVORY or P.GREEN.
  • True: Lionel cleared out its parts inventory. A local collector has a three-car Ivory-windowed 409E outfit with all three cars having 412 and California plates (including the observation). More Ivory-window 412 cars turn up than sets indicate.

I was fortunate to find the "North Woods" set in December 2004. A family in the middle of Wisconsin. Lucky kid -- a rare four-car Ivory-windowed set -- the 414 Illinois car was added as a "separate sale" car to his three-car 409E set since its roof does not match the other three cars (light ventilators). Yet this 414 is a late one with rivet-detailed ends and brass journals.

Above is the way the set was found. Two of the dark ventilator roofs had been poorly repainted. No boxes. So I bought a three-car Ivory-windowed set for its roofs and boxes. To see the results, click 2009 Photos

Note: By 1934, all Green state cars had Ivory windows so a rubber-stamped subtitle was no longer needed.
But note the set below. As Lionel was clearing things out, they had to subtitle some boxes P. GREEN
denoting what collectors today call 'Apple Green' windows.

Ives State Set

Not really a State Set, but very unusual. Lionel was in bankruptcy and clearing its shelves, click DSS.
