This is
an unusual car -- a very late Illinois car with rivet details on its
ends. The car is nearly flawless, but a miscreant kid did a number on
the box. Note that the box below is subtitled "P. Green" to
show the window colors. Lionel did this so a set would not be sold with
mixed window colors (Ivory and Green). Collectors call this window color
Apple Green. The tape on the box was not used by Lionel until 1933.
Imagine letting a kid near something as nice as this!
The four doors are
a slightly darker State Green than the car body. Close inspection shows
that they were once painted State Brown! The body and roof show no
evidence of prior paint. The matching 412 California car that came with
this set showed State Brown under its State Green body paint! The set's
416 New York observation car was an early style. Lionel likely found a
stack of extra 416's and made up State Green coaches with Pea Green
windows so they could unload them.
