| Note that the box below has 1934 Orange tape on top of 1929 Green/Red train tape. Lionel was clearing out old stock and likely wanted to make sure the loco still ran. Also this loco came with small White tin flags rather than the usual tall brass-poled Green celluloid flags. I have a two-tone Brown 408E which came with four small White flags in an envelope. |

| I have a theory on these re-taped 381E boxes. The loco had been boxed 4 or 5 years earlier and sat in a warehouse. Perhaps Lionel wanted to re-lubricate them, but the two re-taped 381E's I've seen (plus a late Brown 408E) came with four White metal flags (like those on 400E's, etc.). Perhaps they opened the boxes because heat had done in the original Green acetate flags? |
