Here is an
abbreviated email from a knowledgeable collector that found this
website. My comments are in Blue. Be sure
to see the photos below. The car number plates are below the bathroom
windows -- this practice must have begun in 1931.
"I joined TCA
in 1967 ... About a year into collecting ... I had an opportunity to buy
a 433E set from an old time collector for a $1,000 which at that time
was a lot of money. I didn't know anything about Ivory window trim or
the scarcity of this set but it sure looked great all strung out on a
shelf behind glass. ...
The set was comprised of a 1931 black 400E/T with handrail snivvies,
white/red number boards, Newton logo frame and cylinders and no web
support on the tender side ladder (yes, 1931 for
sure). The cars 412, 413 & 416 had cast, cast, brass journal
boxes, ivory window trim and monotone very shiny dark green roofs
and end rivets. The boxes had originally been sealed with plain
tape (1931)
and the Schifenhaus box logos had no date identifier. ... condition of
the set was EXC+/ LN. ...
... in 2001 I was asked to verify a very unusual Olympian set at York.
The fellow opened up the back of his car and WOW...a 1932 stamped 381U
boxed engine and...you guessed it...3 Ivory windowed cars with cast,
cast, brass journals and end rivets. This set has subsequently been
verified as factory original by tracking down previous owners to the
original owner." |
